Healthcare professionals often recommend stretching before any physical activity. If you're like me, you might not fully appreciate why this advice is crucial until you understand the reasoning behind it.

As you might know, the human body is approximately 60% water (Tobias et al. 2022). This water isn't freely circulating; much of it is contained within the fascial system. Stretching releases bound water from the fascia (Schleip et al. 2012). This process is vital because fascia is the connective tissue that stabilizes muscles, organs, and bones. Releasing water from the fascia hydrates and lubricates the body, enhancing mobility and maintaining fascial integrity. This integrity is important as fascia is rich in nerve fibers, making it very sensitive (Bordoni 2023).

Neglecting fascia care can limit movement. As part of the peripheral nervous system, any stiffness or tightness is quickly communicated to the brain. Stretching also affects neurophysiological conditions, as nerve fibers activate neural responses (Imagawa et al. 2023). By stretching and engaging these central nervous system pathways, the body benefits from tissue relaxation and pain reduction due to the mind-body connection. In this way stretching directly influences muscle stiffness (Kosuke Takeuchi et al. 2023), contributing to neuromuscular efficiency. Muscle stiffness refers to the resistance of muscles to stretch and can significantly influence overall physical performance and mobility. When muscles are stiff, they can limit the range of motion and increase the risk of injury during physical activities. By engaging in regular stretching routines, individuals can effectively reduce muscle stiffness, leading to enhanced neuromuscular efficiency.

Stretching plays a crucial role in assisting the body in correcting muscle imbalances and learning to engage the correct muscles. Muscle imbalances occur when certain muscles are stronger or tighter than their opposing muscles, which can lead to poor posture, movement dysfunction, and increased risk of injury. By incorporating stretching exercises that target tight or overactive muscles, individuals can promote a more balanced musculature. This balance is essential for optimal movement patterns and overall physical health.

No matter if you're an athlete, work in an office, lift weights, or engage in repetitive tasks, the benefits and enhancements from stretching are unparalleled. Incorporating just a few minutes of stretching—be it static, dynamic, or other types—into your daily routine can significantly boost your health.
